Volume 2 of 54 of Jules Verne's "Extraordinary Voyages", first printed in 1866. Jules Verne's classic tale of the fictional first English expedition to explore and reach the North Pole. Led by the obessive Captain Hatteras, his quest to reach the Pole knows no bounds. Adventuring through mutiny, frozen temperatures, and polar bear attacks, he journeys forever northward with his faithful dog, Duke. This particular edition is reproduced from English-edition public works, and is presented simply with an emphasis on straightforward presentation, attractiveness and continuity of appearance, with each title in the "Extraordinary Voyages" sporting a journal-style brown cover accompanied by a cover illustration and quote from the text on the back cover.

This is of course an exciting book to read but the stock the publisher used for covers curles up into a roll in both front and back shortly after you start reading it. And I mean curles up, not a little fold or bend. Never seen anything like it even in the cheepest paperback editions. Was hoping to add it to my Verne collection but the way it is will not even fit on a book shelf... Too bad.

The Adventures Of Captain Hatteras Jules Gabriel Verne 9781475270358 Books Reviews

For those of us of a certain age, not that we lived in the 19th Century, the name Jules Verne always conjures unforgettable images of people, places and things that remain indelibly etched in the mind long, long after we've turned the last page. Jules Verne is an endless adventure; we end one, then start another and another, until we realize that we've virtually traveled to almost every place on this planet and the heavenly bodies that surround it. The fifth of his magnificent Extraordinary Voyages, The Adventures of Captain Hatteras is a breathtaking novel set in the frigid regions of the Arctic Circle and the North Pole itself, though we know now that finding an active volcano there strains credulity. It was widely believed at the time that there was an opening at the top of the world which led to the very depths of the earth. A concept that inspired Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. And Captain Hatteras is Jules Verne at his prime, at his most imaginative stage, at his thrilling best. Its plot is simple yet intriguing In Liverpool, a seaman named Richard Shandon, First Mate, receives an anonymous letter asking him to construct a reinforced ship and assemble a reliable crew for a rough voyage to the Northern regions of North America, and everyone, Hatteras promises, will be richly rewarded. Once up in the Arctic labyrinth one of the crewman reveals himself as Captain John Hatteras, and his mission is to be the first man to reach the North Pole. So off they go into one of the most horrendous adventures imaginable, even by today's standards.
These are just a few of the images alluded to above sailing and trekking through sub-zero temperatures amid gigantic icebergs; cutting wind; mutiny; near starvation; bold huskies; sudden storms; castaways wintering in an ice house; a floating iceberg packed with ravenous polar bears about to leap down onto the ship and devour the bold explorers, and a breathless ending to satisfy the fastidious reader. This Oxford University Press edition is a new translation with an introduction and notes by the Jules Verne scholar William Butcher, giving this particular Verne work all the attention and justice it merits.
after making the round of the verne classics, i've decided to endeavor to read all of verne's 'voyages extraordinaire' series. 'the adventures of captain hatteras' is labelled as #2 in the series. much as in the first book, 'five weeks in a balloon', you can see the more popular elements of verne's style and can draw comparisons to his other works.

the novel takes place in 1861. a sailor by the name of shandon receives instructions from a mysterious captain to prepare a ship for an undisclosed expedition. shandon prepares the ship all according to his precise instructions, even taking aboard the captain's dog. the ship even sets sail to greenland, yet the captain has not appeared. finally, in a moment of near catastrophe, captain john hatteras, disguised as one of the sailors of the crew, assumes control over a shocked and humiliated shandon. captain hatteras is infamous for his two failed attempts to reach the north pole. he was the sole survivor of his second attempt and afterwards found it impossible to recruit a new ship's crew unless he did it in absolute secrecy. his plan was to reveal himself once his ship was too far northward to turn back.

captain hatteras strikes me as very similar to captain nemo from 'twenty thousand leagues under the sea'. he is a typical anti-hero archetype with a vast personal fortune, that he uses to fund his personal ambitions. unlike nemo however, hatteras, an englishman, has a strong sense of nationalism; whereas nemo affiliates with no country. also, captain nemo shows a very strong devotion to his crew, whereas hatteras seems willing to sacrifice his crew for sake of reaching the pole.
coincidentally, nemo discovers the south pole in his tale.

dr. clawbonny, the ship's doctor is the savant archetype by which through convenient dialogue, verne can delve into his encyclopedic descriptions of the history of arctic expeditions and previous attempts to reach the north pole. the ship eventually becomes stuck in the ice, afterwards the characters are often saved by the actions of the doctor. he lights a fire using a lens made of ice, he can make bullets using frozen mercury and is able to kill half a dozen bears by remotely igniting (probably a big thing back then) a hundred pounds of powder. they also build an ice house to seek shelter and stay for the winter until the ice melts.

among the more notable events were a brief stopover in the magnetic pole and the 'pole of cold', finding a crew of another expedition buried in the snow, returning from an expedition on the ice to find the ship burning and the mutinous crew gone, "wintering" on the ice, the journey northward in the summer once the ice melts.

they were able to resuscitate the crew's captain and discover he is an american whose ship is stuck on the ice farther north of hatteras. a rivalry quietly yet surely begins between the two, particularly after they travel on the ice to the american's ship and ultimately use it build a small boat.

in the summer, the ice melts and they're able to journey northward and find it teeming with life. they discover a small island with a volcano right at the north pole. they name the volcano after hatteras. hatteras climbs it to reach the exact north pole and falls into the crater. he is saved ultimately by the american and his dog. the wikipedia entry for this book states he jumps in, but the copy i read did not tell it as such. rocks give out from under him and he falls in. hatteras is shown as having gone into a gentle madness as a result and does not speak for the rest of the book.

through hard troubles, the remaining members of the crew and the american are able to get back to liverpool. just as in the first book, 'five weeks in a balloon', there is a final obstacle in the final pages that they must overcome before they are saved. and just as in the first book, the means of them overcoming this last obstacle is something apt to the subject matter of the book they make a makeshift sailboat out of a passing by iceberg in order to catch a nearby ship!

this was an excellent book! another exciting subject matter clobbered by the exhaustive literary prowess of verne!
I was glad to find this new and unabridged translation of a great Jules Verne story at a great price.
With perhaps the exception of "Paris in the 20th century", all and one of Jules Verne are simply fascinating.
This is of course an exciting book to read but the stock the publisher used for covers curles up into a roll in both front and back shortly after you start reading it.
