Synopsis
“Hey, Mike, what’re we gonna do today?”
It’s 1960, and Mike is ten again, at least in his mind. Looking back on his final year of elementary school, he reflects on the many challenges that confronted him then. Junior high and the opposite sex loom on the horizon—his mini-version of the New Frontier. From the neighborhood baseball field to the local movie theatre, from Halloween to Christmas morning, and from Bozo buckets to a once-in-a-lifetime trip across the country to Disneyland, Mike is constantly in motion—and often in trouble. But he has his younger brother Tommy and a few close friends to help him navigate the vast suburban wilderness. This snapshot of a bygone era shows the last generation allowed to be kids taking full advantage of it—and having the time of their lives.

Ever since I first read it in about 6th grade, Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine has been one of my favorite books, a quintessential coming-of-age story, all the better for being set in a town not far from Chicago. Well, I'm delighted to report that my old favorite has been surpassed in Michael J. Bellito's Ten Again. I recognized myself so frequently in these pages that I began to wonder if I wasn't somehow reading my own story. Suddenly things that I had forgotten from my youth sprang vividly into my memory. "Ah yes! THAT!" Mr. Bellito has cleared touched something universal here, as so many of the other reviewers here attest. As such, it is a work of transcendent beauty--but is simultaneously earthy, raw and unflinchingly honest. And just a fantastically fun ride.Another reviewer noted that Mr. Bellito spent many years as a teacher, sharing similar stories with his students. As someone who was privileged to be in his classroom, I can tell you that the one day he set aside each semester for storytelling was the most anticipated day of the year. Everyone in the room would be howling with laughter, including Mr. Bellito. The stories in this book are the result of many years of this kind of practice, tales honed by a storyteller before an audience as merciless as only high school students can be.
Personally, I'm waiting for the director who'll step forward and turn this into a bright and sizzling little Indie film.

Ten Again edition by Michael J Bellito Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Ten Again takes places in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago in the 1960s, but that doesn't matter. All that matters, as you read this wonderful book, is that you remember what it's like to be 10 years old and straddling that time between childhood and being a teenager. If you can recall those days, you will love Ten Again, no matter where you grew up or currently reside. You will laugh out loud and maybe even shed a tear or two as you travel the road of being 10 with young Mike.
Michael Bellito was my creative writing and speech teacher in high school and I vividly recall him sharing the stories of his youth with us as a way to illustrate painting pictures with words. He's a terrific storyteller and by the end you'll think you lived those days with him.
Without a doubt, Ten Again was my favorite book of 2009. I can't wait for his next novel.
Fantastic read! The author draws in his audience with such wonderful memories and touching, true realities of what it feels like to be a kid again - makes us all want to return to the simpler days in life, but yet reminds us of the complexities of childhood. A MUST READ for anyone from Chicago or who grew up in that era! Thank you!!
I really enjoyed it. It was funny, nostalgic and heartwarming, and should be required reading for anyone born in the Chicago area- or anywhere else for that matter- before 1970. It's a terrific book, I laughed out loud many times- something I don't often do while reading a book. It really captured the spirit of the era and of being a kid during it. I can't wait to jump into "First Time Around" next.
I so enjoyed this walk back in time and though I am a bit younger than the author (smile)..realised that while some things change, some things remain the same. Michael Bellito does a fabulous job of making you slow down for a few precious moments and reflect on life as it was at that time -- although despite what some people might think or say, life was not necessarily less complicated than it is today! His character Mike navigates his complex preteen world, dealing with his family, friends, teachers and the rest in a very honest and genuine way. He is not a hero nor a villain, but just a kid that many of us, regardless of gender, can identify with. Having a 9 year old son myself, I read with great interest. Thank you Mike for a book that made me smile! And for those of you from the Chicago suburbs, there are special added treats. I highly recommend it.
What a fun read! This a great book for anyone who grew up in or around the 1960s or anyone who remembers the 60s and especially for anyone who remembers Chicagoland of that era. Mike Bellito grew up in the Northwest Suburbs. Even though he insists this book is fiction, the 10-year-old main character is named "Mike." Go figure. What a wonderful trip down memory lane...even for me. I am a bit older than "Mike" and a child of south central Indiana, but I can definitely relate to the specifics of this memoir-turned-novel.
Bellito does a fabulous job of what he no doubt taught his creative writing students at John Hersey High School to do - show, don't tell. His descriptions are astoundingly specific and that is much of the charm of the book. Even though I didn't grow up in the Chicago suburbs, many of Bellito's descriptions are universal for the time he describes. Don't miss it!
Here's what another reviewer says ''Ten Again' is a memoir-style gem that accurately captures the innocence of boyhood during the innocence of America; pre-Kennedy assassination. Bellito's voice as narrator rings true on such boyhood topics as baseball, ding-dong ditch, amusement parks, and the newly discovered pleasure of television. This laugh-out-loud recollection of what it meant to be a boy in suburban Chicago during the mid-to late fifties re-creates the lost memories of Riverview Amusement Park and `The BOZO Show' with such vivid portrayals that this Chicago girl heard the voices of her own parents in his narrative. If this beautiful slice of Americana, as told from Mike's point of view, doesn't leave you longing to hop on your bike, drag the toboggan down from the garage rafters, or load the family into the minivan for a trip to the Grand Canyon, then you have forgotten what it's like to be 10; when the only thing holding you back was that you had to return home when the street lights went on."
I so agree! I'm looking forward to Bellito's second novel - "First Time Around." It's dedicated to his children - Matt and Joy. Both were students of mine at Wheeling High School. They have to be mighty proud of their dad.
